How to build a strong profile: Work experience

This is part four in our series of Insider Tips on how to use your Gradintelligence profile to maximise your chances of being discovered for opportunities. We love connecting students with opportunities, and we want to make sure students and graduates get the most out of their profiles.

Why build your profile?
Simply put, the more you develop your profile, the more likely you will be tagged for opportunities that are best suited to you and your preferences.

Gradintelligence uses an intelligent matching algorithm which takes the elements of your profile, and aligns them with the criteria that employers and Higher Education institutions are searching for in potential candidates or students.

So, how should you do it?
Increasingly, employers are looking for more than a degree when it comes to hiring recruits. Many ask for work experience of some form or other. In last week’s post, we talked about your education, which can be automatically filled out on your profile by your HEAR (if you have one). When it comes to work experience – you need to fill in the details yourself! But don’t worry, you only have to do it once. Once this information is listed on your profile, it can be used in every application form you submit through the Gradintelligence system.

This isn’t just about traditional work experience either – you can update your profile with: full-time and part-time work, placements, internships, charitable and voluntary work, and other project-based experience. All of these details are important and help to draw a richer portrait of you as a candidate to a potential employer. Don’t dismiss unpaid work either, a recent study found that voluntary experience makes you more employable. fb-volunteerMany employers value the skills that are gained from any kind of experience, but often find that voluntary experience is not reported in job applications, and therefore they can’t find out whether the candidate has the vital skills they seek.

Just go to the Personal Profile area of your account to update it with your experience. Help to differentiate yourself by providing as much detail as possible!
